What is an IP address?

An IP address is an identifier used to tell other computers where they are speaking to.
Think of it as the same as the address of your home in reference to sending mail. IP
addresses come in the format Each individual number within an IP address can
range from 0-255. When connecting to a website, your computer sends out a request to
the IP address of the website, asking for information. That system gets the information,
and sends it back to your IP address, and your computer then processes it. Additionally,
there are two types of IP addresses, version 4 and version 6. These are commonly referred
to as IPv4 and IPv6 respectively. Mediacom currently only offers IPv4 IP addresses, and
virtually all network equipment handles IPv4 addresses. IPv6 is a much newer protocol and
is not supported by many devices yet.
