Problems with "self-assigned IP address" and no Internet
« on: August 10, 2012, 08:18:30 PM »
I'm running a Mac OSX (v10.6.8) on Mediacom cable internet. Internet went down yesterday afternoon for no apparent reason, now I can't log back on to our network. When I look at my Network Preferences I see a message that "AirPort has the self-assigned IP address 169.254.56.113 and will not be able to connect to the Internet." I've tried rebooting both my Airport and the Mediacom modem, nothing works. I also tried plugging the Ethernet cable directly into my laptop, but all I get is a similar message about the self-assigned IP address. Can you please help?

Thanks.

Hello,

I am looking at your modem and currently showing that it is online and has a valid IP address. If you can, can you power cycle your mode and router, then plug your modem directly into your computer and let me know what your IP(v4) address is.

Sorry for the delay. I'm having to log on periodically by using my smartphone as a hotspot until this is fixed.

Before I contacted you last night I had already tried rebooting both the modem and the Airport, and then plugging the modem directly into my computer. Similar to what happened when I tried to connect via wifi, I got a message saying that "the modem has the self-assigned IP address [BLANK] and will not be able to connect to the Internet." I'm pretty sure that the IP address it gave was 169.254.56.113, same as when I've tried the wifi. But I didn't write it down and can't check yet this morning because the modem is in a bedroom and my family is still asleep.

So as soon as they wake I'll do it again and get back to you with a confirmation of what it says the IP(v4) address. Thanks.

Just connected my computer to the modem via Ethernet, per your request. I get the following message: "Ethernet has a self-assigned IP address and will not be able to connect to the Internet."

IP(v4) address is 169.254.56.113, sames as when I try to connect via wifi.

Any ideas? We've been without Internet access for two days, I rely on it for my work.

Thanks for your help!

Let me check over your modem a bit closer here to see what I can find out here.

Your modem is showing an active ethernet connection to a devices with a MAC address ending with c408. Just to make sure I'm on the same page a you; your computer is connected via ethernet to the modem and not your airport router at the moment, correct? If so, make sure the computer is set to 'obtain an IP address automatically' and not a static IP.

If not, do you happen to have another computer you can connect to the modem to test?

Thank,
Dallas

That's correct: when I sent you my last message, I was using my laptop connected via Ethernet to the modem, not through our Airport router.

The Network Preferences are set to obtain an IP address automatically, via DHCP. I've also tried manually deleting the IP address and renewing the DHCP lease. Still comes back the same.

We have two other Macbooks in the family, I'll try connecting via one of those and will get back to you shortly.

Thanks

Tried to connect using another laptop per your suggestion and got a similar message but with a different IP address: "Wi-Fi has the self-assigned IP address 169.254.88.6 and will not be able to connect to the Internet."

What should I try next?

I am currently showing that the modem is online and has a valid 50. IP address. Are you still seeing the 169?

Yes. Now it's 169.254.132.20, but otherwise still the same error message about a self-assigned IP.

Plug your modem directly into your computer and check your IP again for me.

Same issue: message says "Ethernet has a self-assigned IP address and will not be able to connect to the Internet." IP address is 169.254.56.113.

Is your IP set as a static IP or Dynamic IP address? We are showing that the modem has a valid IP. If we are unable to get one there, then we will have to get a tech out to see what is going on.

DHCP is dynamic, right? I'm on a Mac and don't see static vs. dynamic: the options on the dropdown for configuring IP are DHCP; DHCP with manual address; BootP; manual; and off. It's currently set on DHCP.

That's how it's set. I just tried rebooting the modem again, connecting via Ethernet and also rebooting the Airport and connecting via wi-fi. Still nothing...

In that case, we will have to get a tech out to see what is causing the issues.

Thanks. Can I request one through you? I'd like to get a work order in the system ASAP, since we've already been without connectivity for 48 hours. Connecting through my Droid hotspot is going to quickly get expensive...

I really appreciate your trying to help!
