IMAP Email settings
« on: February 07, 2012, 10:52:01 AM »
I cannot find instructions to setup IMAP using an mchsi.com email address. Is it possible? Using thunderbird mail client. Specifically need the incoming address and port # & smpt address and port #.

We do not support IMAP but these are the setting you need to use for any email client.

Username: Enter your full email address.
Password: Enter your email account password.
POP server (incoming) :  mail.mediacombb.net
Port:  110
Security type: SSL off
SMTP server (outgoing): mail.mediacombb.net
Port: 25
Security type: SSL off

Let me know if you need any further clarification

so when you say you don't support IMAP are you saying that I cannot use IMAP at all? or are you saying IMAP can be used, but you just don't typically help troubleshooting IMAP problems?

IMAP will not work at all. Our mail servers are only set for POP3 type connections. Unfortunately I am not aware of any plans to support IMAP in the future.

so what do you recommend to customers who want to check email from various locations???
Home Workstation
Business Workstation
Mobile Device
Laptop
etc...

not a fan of webmail. prefer the standalone client.

I would recommend setting the client to leave a copy of the email on the server.

please clarify, when you say full email address (likely 1 of the 3)

username (only)
username@mchsi.com
username@mediacombb.net (even though its an mchsi.com address)

It would be your full email address either username@mediacombb.net or username@mchsi.com.  Which ever it is.

according to this setup it refers to using SSL and port 995.

Once I changed ports from 110 to 995 and turned on SSL, I was finally able to download my mail. I am currently not on a mediacom network though.

That is the correct setting for when you are off the Mediacom network.

MediacomDallas:

Just to clarify and well ask a question based on the clarification. "Mediacom does NOT provide an IMAP service and has no plans to in the future."

and the above recommendation of "leaving messages on the server" addresses accessing mediacom email from multiple devices.

to rephrase the original posters question, how do you manage a mediacom account from multiple devices, i.e. deleting emails? if you follow the advice of leaving emails on server, you have to delete the same email multiple times.

I do hope my tone comes across as me asking and not criticizing. I'm just looking for a way to manage my @mchsi.com email address one across multiple devices. any help or suggestion is appreciated!

Like posters above, i have a laptop, a desktop , a phone and a tablet which I could be using at any time.

Thanks!

BA

If you do not leave a copy of the messages on the server you will only be able to download the message to a single device since the first device will pull the email and there will be no way for the other devices to view that same message.

Each device should have a setting to let you delete the message from the server when you delete it from the client.

Thanks for the quick reply James, I may have not been clear.

Let's say you leave messages on the server.
You also configure one (or more) clients (let's say desktop in this case) to delete from server when deleted from client.

Each client downloads a copy of an item/email, in this case Tablet, Laptop and Desktop.
I delete the item on the laptop and the tablet and desktop will still have the item waiting to be deleted. also it still resides on the mediacom server.

Until i delete it from the desktop (or whatever client is configured to delete from server), it remains on the server. it also remains on the other devices until deleted from them.

So in effect I am deleting the same email 3 times (or how ever many devices downloaded it before it was deleted from server).

with IMAP (or Exchange or whatever mailserver tech NOT POP3), each device would reflect the server mailbox.

is there any current way to do that with my @mchsi.com  account?

Is there a reason Mediacom does not utilize IMAP? I cannot imagine that we are the first two customers to ask this question. Especially now with smart phones becoming more mainstream, it would seem that a lot of users are like myself and do want to access their account from different devices, and not have to manage the account multiple times by deleting the same email from each device. I realize that this could increase disk space usage for common users, but it seems to be commonplace for other email providers anymore.

The email platform we use is a vendor. We have limited control over it. I will pass on your desire for imap to decision makers.

Please pass it on for me as well.

As more and more people use multiple devices everyday, this would be a welcomed feature.

You could create an account with Gmail, which supports IMAP, and then configure your Mediacom account to forward everything to Gmail.

I am running into the same problem and have the same need for an IMAP account. Considering the cost for high speed Internet that is paid each month, I would expect you could positively influence your vendor. Please add my vote to moving this forward. With multiple devices everyone is using to view email, I would expect the demand to continue to rise.
