How do I change my IP address?
« on: January 25, 2012, 01:25:23 PM »
Would like a new one.  In the past I have forced it to change by unplugging the modem for a period of time and then plugging it back in.  I have tried this a few times recently, but to no avail.

Sometimes a factory reset of your cable modem will force a new IP address. We do not have a direct way to assign a new address. However, if you can PM me your phone number or account number there are a few tricks we can do here.

Thanks, just saw it. This will take just a few minutes. You will see your modem reset 2 or 3 times. I'll post on here once I'm done.

Even after the modem is unregistered from your account and re-registered, the address is still staying the same. Unfortunately the only other way to change this would be to hook another device to the cable modem.

What do you mean "hook another device?"

You mean like a different router?

Another router or another PC will pull a different IP address. The public IP address assigned is associated with the MAC address of the device that's connected to the modem (whether or not it's a PC or router).

Won't this also take care of itself naturally?  Don't they change several times a year?

Yes they are subject to change. There is no set time though. Is there any particular reason you want a new address?

I have reason to believe that it was compromised on a public forum I visit.  I am naturally paranoid and would rather not take any chances.

Understood. Routers act as a fairly secure firewall against the rest of the internet so I don't know how worried you should be. Some routers will give you the option to change their internal MAC address but that varies from router to router and it's not something Mediacom can support.
