Random Slow Internet Speed
« on: September 19, 2010, 04:25:24 PM »
Over the past couple of months I've noticed my Internet speed fluctuating greatly.  I subscribe to 12Mbps download speed and 1Mbps upload speed in my plan.  I normally average between 8-10Mbps down according to Speedtest.net and Speakeasy speed tests, but lately there are quite a few times where it'll test somewhere between 1-5 Mbps down.  If I test it at 3 AM (or another non-peak time), it's almost always fine and running between 8-10 where it should be.

I'm located in the 61264 zip code in Illinois.  Is there an issue in my area of a node being overloaded with customers?  I've checked cable signal strength at the modem during the slow times, and it is always the same.  Signal strength is definitely not the issue because it is always the same whether the download speed is running normally or slowly.

I just ran this test.  Normally mine tests 8-10 Mbps down.

Here is the signal detail off the cable modem at the time of this speed test.

Forward Path:

Signal Acquired at 117.000 MHz
SNR: 37.1 dB
Received Signal Strength:  -2.8 dBmV
Bit Error Rate:  0.000%
Modulation:  256 QAM

Return Path:

Connection:  Acquired
Frequency:  25 MHz
Power Level:  39.5 dBmV
Channel ID:  2
Modulation:  16 QAM

I've power cycled the modem many times and plugged directly into it for testing purposes.  The problem seems to be in Mediacom's network somewhere around me, and it is completely random regarding fast and slow speed.  What can you do to help me fix the problem?

bm1,

I apologize for the problems you are having with slow speeds, and would love to get this taken care of for you. I am not seeing any problems in that direct zip code, but I'm limited on what I can look up via zip code. If you could PM me your MAC address I would love to take a look at the connection and the area to see if there is an area issue or if it is something else that could be causing the problem.

Thanks
Chris

I just received some additional information about this issue, so I thought I would post about it to let you know. The expected final completion date for this issue is going to be around mid December. Maintenance has already been performed for this issue, and at this time we are currently waiting on a few parts to come in so we can finish performing the work that needs to be done. Once the parts come in and we have them installed the speed issue in your area should be fully resolved.

I just thought I'd check in to see where we're at on this.  Is the fix still scheduled for mid-December?  If so, are there any more specifics on it available?

I'm still seeing the large fluctuations in downstream bandwidth during peak hours (mostly prime-time and weekends).

Any updates would be great.  Thanks!

At the moment, the repair is still set to begin mid December and be complete by the end of the year. I will keep you posted if we hear anything else.

Just checking on any updates...  This has actually gotten a bit worse this month.  An ETA on resolution would be great.

Thanks!

I will be happy to check for you, but unfortunately I can not find any information that I can pull up your account with, and Chris is not currently in the office. Will you PM me either your account number or the phone number on the account please?

Thank you for the account information. I checked and the two people that we were communicating with about this issue have both been out of the office for the holidays. One of them should be back from their vacation tomorrow, and we hope to hear back from him then or the day after that. As soon as we get a reply we will let you know.

They did get back to me today to say that the large overhaul has been delayed due to the equipment not coming in. I am working with them right now to see about getting something done to alleviate the bandwidth issues in the mean time. I will keep you posted.
