What is the difference between the Mediacom Home Networking package and
using my own wireless router?

Mediacom's Home Networking package includes a modem with a built in wireless router.
This is a specialized piece of equipment which, unlike commercially available routers,
Mediacom will provide support for the use and configuration of. This reduces your
connection down to two possible points of failure: the modem and the attached computers.
This can drastically simplify troubleshooting. The trade-off for this is that the equipment
has fewer available features than many commercially available routers. Our gateways do
not provide VPN support, and cannot use UPnP. Additionally, many of them are limited to
802.11b speeds, which can be a major factor in determining which option you would prefer
to use.
